Thrifty

I've been collecting the beautiful Everyman's Library hardback editions of Jane Austen's novels. As I re-read Austen again and again I feel the purchase is justified and I've almost completed the set. However, I have resolved not to buy any other new hardbacks this year. I will wait for the paperback, buy secondhand or borrow from the library.

This is my favourite secondhand bookshop. It's Ventnor Rare Books on the Isle of Wight. Just five minutes away from the elegant Victorian seafront, you can purchase your book and read it on the beach!

I've just starting collecting the Everyman's editions of Austen. (So far, I have Northanger Abbey and Emma.) They are lovely, and I know I'll enjoy having nice editions to read.

As a student, I susually buy paperbacks. Recently though, because it was the only copy I could find, I bought an Everyman eition of Doctor Thorne by Anthony Trollope.

I think I'm in love with the binding, paper, ribbon etc so can understand you collecting their editions of Austen. I re-read her novels to pieces as well, so may have to invest!

Sounds lovely. I wish there was a used bookstore nearby, but we only have those overpriced chain stores.

I am collecting Modern Library hardbound of Jane Austen — 4 down. I am going to try to read the unread books on my shelves and use my library. I just stopped in to my favorite bookstore in Madison — very much like yours but no beach. Just a wonderful window with 2nd-hand books and blooming plants. Inside a wonderful staff and walls of books.

Teresa, they are beautiful aren't they? I also have a few Bronte's in Everyman.

Sarah, yes, I love a ribbon bookmark. Every book should have one!

Tuesday, Mr Waterstone's has made a lot of money from me! PS I love the new look of your blog, that red text on white works really
well.

Kristina, I'm missing your posts!

Linda, I'm saving your Secret Garden post to read at the weekend when I'm fully awake and can do it justice!

I've also read all of Jane except...Northanger Abbey, I think. Did you see the "Jane Austen Book Club"? It really shows how a book/author can impact your life. I love reading but I don't shun movie interpretations. I just look at them as another person's idea of what they read...something different from the book...that way I don't feel too disturbed. My two favorites are "Sense and Sensibility" (as you know the Emma Thompson film interpretation was fabulous but of course much was added/subtracted) and "Pride and Prejudice" (A & E film version is the best...because I fell in love with Colin Firth- I'm so objective!)
"Jane Austen's Life Society Works" shows her Chawton Cottage home..."Cottage" is a term to be taken lightly. The collection was a gift from my husband who feeds my Austin obsession...but it extends to many other authors as well...(I just wrote a post about William Carlos Williams.)
Stunning to have a blog that focuses on great reads.

Cynthia, thanks for dropping by! I have read The Jane Austen Book Club and I loved it. I'm not hugely into films so I've not seen many Austen adaptions but I thought Gwyneth Paltrow was a very good Emma a few years ago.
